½ day excursion – ALBI

Afternoon excursion to nearby Albi, famous as the birthplace of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. The famous 19^th century painter worked mainly in Montmartre depicting scenes from the “café-théâtres” and brothels. Over 600 of his paintings and posters are on display, given to the town of Albi after the death of the artist.

The picturesque brick town sits on the banks of the Tarn River, and it is the former bishop’s palace and gardens which serve as a setting to the prestigious collection.

Next to the palace is the massive brick cathedrale dating from the XIIIth century.  Within is Europe’s largest mediaeval fresco of th “Last Judgement”, as well as Renaissance decor of the vaulting, a rare finely sculpted “rood screen”.

The excursion includes admission to the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum and a guided visit of the cathedral and “Old Alby” neighborhood.

½ day excursion – CARCASSONNE

Meet your guide and coach at 1:30 p.m. and departure toward Carcassonne, whose famed double-walled fortress dates from the Roman occupation of Gaul.  Upon arrival, guided visit of the medieval castle and ramparts. Leisure time in the town,  then return by coach to Toulouse.  Expected arrival time : 7 p.m.

½ day visit – Cité de l'Espace

Head

Coach boarding at 1 :30 p.m.  Transfer by private coach to the Cité de l’Espace, a park entirely devoted to learning about the univers surrounding our planet, and man’s space adventures.

Temporary and permanent exhibits include Ariane V and its launching pad, the Mir space station, the Terr@dome .

A planetarium show and Imax show are both included in the admission, as well as free discovery of the parc, indoors and outdoors.

Ride to city center on the metro (ticket not included) and meet with your guide near the Tourist Office (“Donjon du Capitole”).  Start on a walking tour of the historic heart of Toulouse, whose 2000-year history will be explored.  Visit Gallo-roman vestiges  as well as portions of the mediaeval wall which surrounded Toulouse centuries ago. Visit the “Capitole”, seat of power since Charlemagne, and the beautiful square surrounding it. Also can be seen :  the 11^th century  St. Sernin Basilica, the surprising “palm-tree” vaulting of the Jacobin church, the beautiful Renaissance manor, “Hôtel d’Assézat”,near  the oldest bridge in Toulouse (“le Pont Neuf”).

The Garonne River banks and the Canal du Midi are both classified as world heritage sites, portions of which can be seen on the walking tour.  Fountains and squares provide greenery and plaisant meeting points for the population.
